As a child, I was a collector. Not just on the side, the way kids usually collect things – but with a devotion that filled my entire being.
It started with coins. I would walk through every store in our village, change in hand, inspecting every single coin. Which country? Which minting year? Did I already have this one? The baker, the kiosk, the small produce market – they all knew the boy who examined his change so closely. Piece by piece, my collection became whole, and with every new coin, something grew inside me that felt like order.
Then came the stamps. Our priest – a kind, generous man – gifted me thousands of stamps from all over the world over the years. Countries I had never even heard of, colors and motifs that transported me to distant places. I sorted them by continents, by countries, by years. For hours. In my youth, trading cards were added, video games – all sorts of things piqued my curiosity.
But what fascinated me most were the rarities. A specific 50-Pfennig coin with a minting error, for example – a tiny flaw in the minting process that suddenly made an ordinary piece extremely valuable. I read countless books and magazines, analyzed data, and learned to recognize what makes an object special. Even back then, I understood that value lies not only in the obvious – but in the details, in knowledge, in looking closely.
Why collecting was more than a hobby
Today I know that my collections gave me something back then that I desperately needed.
They gave me order in a time that was anything but orderly. They gave me structure, a place that belonged to me, a small world I could shape and control myself. When much around me was uncertain, my lovingly sorted albums were a rock. Something that endured. Something no one could take away from me.
This deep connection between possession and inner order has never left me. I haven't become an obsessive neat freak – but I need and value structure and clarity, everywhere. They are the reason why today I can be productive, create clarity, and think things through before I do them.
What began as a childhood search for stability has become my greatest strength.
From the coin album to mental load
Today, the coins and stamps have given way to other things, and the world around me is vastly more complex. The childhood search for order has turned into a tangible necessity.
The things I manage today no longer fit into a small album. When to-do lists overflow and everyday tasks pile up – be it maintenance intervals for the heating, subscription deadlines, the expiration of a fixed interest rate, gathering documents for taxes or insurance cases, or simply keeping track of our car's next inspection – I quickly realize: Without absolute clarity, you lose your mind. Everyday life consumes you if you don't know where your own things stand.
But it is no longer just about crossing off to-dos. It is about the big picture. Having a complete, honest overview of all assets, income, and expenses is essential in these fast-paced times.
I need this structure and clarity today more than ever, not just to function, but to keep my mind clear for the things that truly matter. That is exactly why I built myself a system for it, one that unfolds its greatest value for me personally: It gives me true peace of mind.
