Frequently asked questions

What is the FIRE number?

The amount you could keep withdrawing your spending from: annual spending divided by the withdrawal rate. At 4 % a year that is 25 years of spending. Your fixed and variable spending count; a loan instalment does not, because it ends once the loan is repaid.

Why a 4 % withdrawal rate?

The FIRE movement usually works with 4 % a year. The figure goes back to US studies, among them the 1998 Trinity study of historical stock and bond returns. It is not a promise: 3 or 3.5 % is more cautious. You change the rate on the return step.

What return does the calculator assume?

The one you enter. The calculator asks for an annual return on investments and digital assets; both fields start at 0 % and we don't suggest a figure. What you save each month counts as cash, without a return. The only fixed assumptions are 2 % income growth and 2 % inflation a year; the FIRE number rises with inflation.

Do property and other assets count?

No. The calculator compares the FIRE number with cash, investments and digital assets, because only those can be drawn on month by month. Property and other assets sit beside them in the overall picture.

A description, not advice. The calculator works only with your own figures and two fixed assumptions: 2 % income growth and 2 % inflation a year. It counts a return only where you enter one yourself (starting value 0 %) and no taxes. It does not calculate pension entitlements and does not replace pension, financial or lending advice.

Add OWNAMIC to your Home Screen

iPhone and iPad have no install dialog – Apple leaves it to Safari's share menu. Three taps and OWNAMIC opens like any other app: full screen, with its own icon.

  1. Tap the share icon in Safari's bottom bar.
  2. Scroll down the list and choose “Add to Home Screen”.
  3. Confirm with “Add” – OWNAMIC is now on your Home Screen.

Only Safari can put a web app on the iOS Home Screen. If you are reading this in another browser, open ownamic.com in Safari first.
